Thlap’qwum Community Settlement Trust Notice of Nomination Meeting
A meeting of the electors of the Snuneymuxw First Nation will be held at the SFN Administration Building, 668 Centre Street, Nanaimo, BC, on Wednesday, 14 February 2018 between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.
The purpose of the meeting is to nominate candidates to be considered for the position of Community Trustee of the Thlap’Qwum Community Settlement Trust (the “Trust”). Three Trustees (2 who reside on-reserve and 1 who resides off-reserve) will be appointed by Council. Two (2) Trustees will be elected, one (1) as a resident Trustee and one (1) as a non-resident Trustee. The term of office for all five will begin on 9 April 2018, and thereafter will coincide with the four-year Chief & Council election cycle begun on December 2, 2017.
Potential candidates (nominees) must apply to the Administrative Trustee to stand for election as a Community Trustee.
Potential candidates must satisfy all the eligibility requirements to serve as a Trustee, which are:
- Be at least 19 years of age,
- Not be mentally incompetent,
- Not be bankrupt or have been convicted of fraud,
- Have financial, legal, accounting, or business education or experience,
- Be a SFN member.
At the date of the election day (7 April 2018), Trustees may NOT be a member of Snuneymuxw Council, nor an employee or officer of Snuneymuxw Nation or a company owned and controlled by Snuneymuxw Nation.
You must be a registered Snuneymuxw member and 18 years or older as of 7 April 2018 (the date of the election) in order to nominate a candidate or to vote.
You may nominate in person at the meeting or by mailing or delivering nomination forms to the Electoral Officer. Mail-in nominations (including those that are hand-delivered) must include the signed and witnessed Voter Declaration Form. You may copy the blank nomination form if you wish to nominate one person for each of the positions. Please note you can only nominate one person for each position (resident and non-resident trustee). Each form must be signed by you and witnessed.
The election will be held at the SFN Administration Building, 668 Centre Street, Nanaimo, between 9:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, 7 April 2018. Any elector may vote in person or by mail-in ballot. On- reserve electors who aren’t able to vote on election day or at the Advance Poll on Saturday, 31 March 2018, may request a mail-in ballot package from the Electoral Officer. Please do this as soon as possible to allow enough time for mailing to you and then mailing back to the Electoral Officer.
Mail-in nomination forms must be received in the post office by 5:00 on 14 February, the date of the nomination meeting. Hand-delivered (to the SFN Office) nomination forms must be received by the Electoral Officer before the close of the nomination meeting at 9:00 p.m. in order to be valid.
