Snuneymuxw Honour Sqwulutsutun Bill Yoachim

On Friday, January 30, people from all walks of life gathered at the Snuneymuxw community kitchen to celebrate Bill Yochiam’s election into the Nanaimo City Council. It was standing room only as approximately 200 people attended.

Surrounded by family, friends, Snuneymuxw and Nanaimo City council members, community members and elders, representatives from RDN and VIU, Bill welcomed each and every guest.

The evening program began with an opening prayer and song by Footprints of the Wolf. Eleanor White stood and shared a few of her thoughts and feelings. Then Councilor Mike Wyse Spoke on behalf of Chief and Council offering congratulations, followed by other speakers sharing a few words with Bill.

The large feast included: chicken, salmon, crabs, and prawns cooked by Brad Wyse & Crew.  Once the meal was concluded-everyone moved to the longhouse for the blanketing ceremony.

The Snuneymuxw Dance group escorted Bill into the longhouse and shared a few songs with the guests.  Then the Kw'umut Lelum kids stood up, shared a few words about how Bill impacted their lives and shared a song from Bella Bella.

The night wrapped up with Bill sharing a few of his own thoughts and feelings.

We wish you all the best Bill!
