‘i’ cun ‘uw ‘i’: Snuneymuxw Youth Community Planning

We know we have always been here in Snuneymuxw, and we’ll be here forever.

Your ideas are important, and we need your voice. As a member of this community, you are part of a collective knowledge that stretches back to the beginning of time. We need your experience and perspective to help restore our presence throughout the territory, so that our children, and their children, feel welcome and at home. How can we develop neighbourhoods that help our families thrive?

We ask ourselves: What is best for our families, for our friends, and for the generations to come? How can we ensure that what we build today will serve our community far into the future? This process is more than just planning; it is about honouring our responsibility to each other and our magnificent land.

This draft community plan for the former DND Lands, was informed by Snuneymuxw members since we started our community planning engagement in 2023, download PDF here. This community plan is still in its draft brainstorming stage, and we’d love more of your feedback and ideas.

This draft community plan highlights the potential for a strong revenue-generating development that will support Snuneymuxw’s broader priorities. This parcel of land is located next to Vancouver Island University and in close proximity to our housing development currently underway in partnership with BC Housing on 5th Street. 

A balanced and sustainable economy serves our community by lifting everyone up without forgetting our Snawayalth. As we embark on this community planning journey, we are thinking deeply about creating spaces that foster connection, culture, and care for one another.

Youth may be contacted to answer follow-up questions or to clarify an idea/response. Due to stock numbers we may not be able to guarantee exact model or colour but we will do our best to keep it consistent with photos below. So, let us know in the survey which Nike accessory you like. We’ll make sure you get it. All items are all-gender and come in one size. Once we run out, we’ll let you know. We will be voting (a ratification vote) in March 2025 regarding the future of the Te’tuxwtun site (former DND lands). This is why we want to ensure we’ve heard your ideas and understand your priorities before we finalize these community plans for voting.

  • Engage with the youth of the community as they are the ones who will  experience the most severe impacts of climate change on Snuneymuxw resources.
  • Incorporate Snuneymuxw traditional knowledge as the driving force behind the western science we leverage to gather information and build working relationships with government, educational, and private sector organizations to restore Snuneymuxw's role as steward of the coast. We are also working to:
  1. Restore and enhance the damaged coastal ecosystems
  2. Protect our coastal resources
  3. Respond to emergencies
  4. Ensure the security and safety of our traditional foods
  5. Build the capacity of our staff
  6. Encourage continuing education
  7. Create career-oriented jobs
