Green Energy Initiatives

The Snuneymuxw People have resided in Snuneymuxw as the first peoples, sustaining their lands, resources, culture and spiritual way of life since time immemorial.

Now, in the midst of a climate crisis, Snuneymuxw is driven by the urgent need to heal the Land and its community and continue the Snuneymuxw legacy of learning from, caring for, protecting, and enjoying the unsparing blessings of this sacred place.

What is Renewable Energy & Why is it Important?

Renewable energy is energy from natural resources that are replenished at a rate that is equal to or faster than the rate at which they are consumed. There are various forms of renewable energy. They include energy generated from solar, wind, geothermal, hydropower and ocean resources, and solid biomass.

Within its lands and diversified geography, Snuneymuxw Lands have an abundance of renewable resources that can be used to produce energy such as updating heating and cooling sources to clean Hydroelectricity powered units, using bioenergy to contribute to cultural burning and using solar photovoltaic power to produce needed energy.

Snuneymuxw Green Energy Projects

Within its lands, Snuneymuxw is exploring these green energy areas to enhance its community.

  1. Hydroelectricity – Using the natural flow of water in rivers to make kinetic power that can be
    transformed into usable energy.
  2. Bioenergy – Using Wood and wood waste that can be combusted to produce heat used for space and water heating, or to produce steam for electricity generation.
  3. Solar Energy – Using Solar energy from the sun in the form of radiated heat and light that can be used to provide lighting and heat for buildings and to produce electricity.
  4. Geothermal Energy – Using Geothermal energy that can be captured from the heat stored beneath the earth’s surface or from the absorbed heat in the atmosphere and oceans.
  5. Ocean Energy – Using technologies to convert the energy of ocean waves and tides into electricity or other useful forms of power.
  6. Community Energy Champion funding - funding support for a designated community energy champion within the community to help plan, implement and evaluate energy-related priorities.
